SFC (Retired) Wayman Aldridge transitioned peacefully at his home on Wednesday morning, December 16, 2020. He was 85 years of age.
Born in Ellaville, Georgia, Wayman was the third of seven children from the union of the late Howard and Nola Bell Hixon Aldridge. A graduate of John Lewis High School in Ellaville, in his later years Wayman continued his education at Phillips College, attaining an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration. Entering the United States Army in 1954, he worked in the Medical Corps, and completed multiple tours of duty stateside and abroad, retiring after 24 years of service. His military awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), Army Commendation Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Silver Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal.
Following military service, Wayman worked as a civil servant at Fort Benning, GA and retired after 20 years. A devoted member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church for over 25 years, Wayman proudly served as a Deacon (including service as Chairman of the Deacon Board for 2 years), Church Treasurer for 6 years, member of the Male Gospel Choir and the Senior Choir, and served on Usher Board #1. Wayman was married to the late Irene Harris Aldridge.
Surviving his departure with cherished memories are their 5 children: Monica Aldridge, Wayman Aldridge, Jr. (Felicia); Michelle Aldridge; Phillip Aldridge (Diometra); and LTC (Ret) Stephanie Aldridge McCorvey (Quinton); three grandchildren, Wayman Zachary Aldridge, Brianna Aldridge, and Quinton McCorvey II; and also surviving his departure, his daughter Patricia Swans and her daughter, Monique Brown; two sisters, Jeannette Mathis and Sudie Dorsey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The Homegoing Celebration for SFC (Retired) Wayman Aldridge will be graveside on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. Due to current restrictions, attendance will be limited to immediate family members.
Visitation will be held at Progressive Funeral Home, 4235 St. Mary’s Road, Columbus, on Monday, December 21, 2020 from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM.
