Progressive Funeral Home respectfully announces the passing of Looney Lee Jones Sr. age 88 of Columbus on March 15, 2021.
Looney Lee Jones, Sr. was born November 3, 1932 in Hartwell, Georgia to the late Bedford and Texie Vera Jones. He was the first of six children. He grew up in Hartwell and graduated from Hart County High in 1952. He was drafted into the U. S. Army during the Korean War.
After his honorable discharge, he moved to Columbus, Georgia where he furthered his education with certifications in Brick Masonry and Auto Mechanics. He met and married the love of his life, Willie G. Jackson. To this union, they were blessed with five children.
Throughout his career, he worked in various occupations including his own businesses of a janitorial service and a lawn care service. He retired from Sunshine Biscuits Company after 26 years. Looney was also an accomplished vocalist and musician, playing the guitar, piano and organ. He played guitar for his sisters’ group, The Jones Sisters, and was a member of several gospel groups, including The Bright Star Gospel Singers, The Guiding Lights and Jeff and the Omegas. He was a member of New Mount Zion Baptist Church where he served as a musician and was a member of the Male Chorus.
Looney transitioned to eternal rest on Monday, March 15, 2021.
He was preceded in death by a son, Looney L. (Lonnie) Jones, Jr., a sister, Alma Cole and a brother, Edward Gilbert Jones. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Willie G. Jones; his children, Linda J. Jones (Myron), John C. Jones (Rachel), Debra Ann Sanders and Debra Jean Hudson (David) and daughter-in-law Brenda Jones; his sisters, Vera Simpson, Equillar Butler and Betty Garvin; five grandchildren, Lee A. Jones, Xavier A. Jones, Amber E. Wharton (Jeffry), Amanda Sanders and David Jones; two great-grandchildren, Leandre Jones and Jeffry Wharton II; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Homegoing Celebration for Mr. Looney Jones, Sr. will be held Friday, March 19, 2021 beginning at 2:00 P.M. at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. Service will be live-streamed. (clickable link below)
