Progressive Funeral Home respectfully announces the passing of MSG (Ret.) James Mitchell age 76 of South Carolina on July 16, 2021.
MSG (Ret.) James Mitchell was born on Johns Island, South Carolina as one of 14 children to his parents Moses and Helen Mitchell. He was proud of his Gullah heritage and did not mind being called a Geechee. Always a hard worker from the age of 12, he joined the military at 18 so that he could continue to help his mother and siblings back home. That path soon led him to Ft. Benning in Columbus, GA where he would meet and marry the true love of his life, Doris C. Baskin. Their union lasted until she went to be home with the Lord twenty years later.
MSG (Ret.) James Mitchell served his country honorably in the U.S. Army for 22 years, 5 months, and 4 days and retired with a host of accolades and accomplishments too numerous to list. He joined Primerica Financial Services just before his retirement when it was still known as A. L. Williams. There, with the help of his loving wife Doris, he became the first African American Regional Vice President in Columbus, GA and reached the status of Senior Vice President. But his most prized accomplishment in life was his relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Anyone who knew MSG (Ret.) James Mitchell knew that he loved the Lord because he would tell you even if you didn’t want to hear it. Likewise, we all knew that there was no one that would pray more fervently and without ceasing for anyone the Lord laid on his heart. His greatest wish was that each and every person would come to have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus. He would often say the testimony and life of his wife Doris led him to this passion.
He is survived by: his children – Monica Mitchell, Traci Pollet, and Sean Mitchell; his grandchildren – Aleksi Reid, Shinette King, Ian Kelley, Corrine Pollet, Symonne Pollet, Angelese Mitchell and Christopher Mitchell; his son-in-law – Stacy Pollet; his sisters – Margaret and Anna Lee; a loving and supportive niece – Francena Freeman; a great grandson – Kaiden King; and an abundance of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, co-workers, and others that enjoyed his company.
The Homegoing Service for Mr. Mitchell will be Monday, July 26, 2021, at 10 AM in the Chapel of Progressive Funeral Home the interment will follow at Main Post Cemetery. The signing of the register book for Mr. Mitchell will be Sunday, July 25, 2021 from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M.

Jim Mitchell changed my life, not once but twice!
I met MSG Jim Mitchell when we served together in the 36 Engineer Group on Fort Benning in the mid 1980's. Our paths crossed again in 1988 when I was in the process of leaving the Army and trying to figure out my next career. We ran into each other in the parking lot of my apartment complex after he had just finished a "kitchen table" presentation to a neighboring family. Jim told me about A.L. Williams and the "Buy Term and Invest the Difference" crusade, then invited me to "Opportunity Night" the following week. That next week Jim showed us how whole life insurance really works with his "Jim's Bank" presentation and invited everyone in the room to consider becoming a part of the A.L. Williams "termites". The very next day, I met with Jim in his office where he showed me the ugly truth about my very own Universal Life insurance policy and how much better off I would be with an inexpensive Term Insurance policy with the balance invested in mutual funds. Holy cow, Batman! All I could think was "if I had fallen prey to whole life, how many of my friends and family were victims too?" When Jim showed me his A.L. Williams paychecks, I joined the crusade on the spot.
Jim Mitchell changed my life that day!
Working together for many years, we became good friends. Jim told me that losing Doris, the love of his life, was devastating but that God had carried him when he had all but given up. It seemed that no matter what was happening, good or bad, Jim Mitchell was always upbeat and positive. So, when I was going through a rough time in my life, I turned to Jim and asked him "How the heck can you remain so upbeat and positive when things are bad?" God knew that I was ready and used Jim Mitchell to lead me to salvation and my on-going journey as a Christ-follower.
Jim Mitchell changed my life that day!
Yes, I am selfishly sad that my good friend is no longer walking this Earth with me. But I know, without a doubt, that Jim Mitchell received his hug from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as he passed through those glorious Pearly Gates. Reunited with Doris and walking those Streets of Gold, he, Doris and Terry are rejoicing, celebrating and singing praises to God.
I love you and will sincerely miss you, Jim!
