Obituary For Cassandra Sumbry

Progressive Funeral Home respectfully announces the passing of Ms. Cassandra Sumbry on February 24th, 2021.

Cassandra Rene Sumbry was born July 27, 1962 to the union of the late John Calvin “Bo” Johnson and the late Christine Gamble Johnson in Columbus, GA. Cassandra, affectionately known by family and friends as “Sput”, after the first artificial satellite launched from earth, and “The Bruiser”, which only her close family would know. Both of these colorful nicknames can be attributed to creative and poetic mind of her father “Bo” who would often tag family and friends with lifelong monikers. Cassandra received her early education in the Muscogee County School District; culminating with graduation in 1980 from G. W. Carver High School where she became a standout softball player for The Tigers “on da hill.” She continued her love for sports; putting down her bat and glove to become an avid pro basketball fan. Some of her favorite players include Michael Jordan, Lebron James, and Steph Curry - all champions on the court as she was a champion in life. Her favorite teams, as you would expect, were formerly the Chicago Bulls, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Miami Heat, and currently the Golden State Warriors – championship winning teams who all believe that “together, we are greater than just me”; the same philosophy “Sput” displayed as she enjoyed gathering and socializing with family and friends.

Since birth, Cassandra was introduced to the “good news” of the gospel of Jesus Christ by her entire family; especially her maternal grandmother, the late Mattie Gamble whom she called by her whole name “Mattie Gamble” the only one of her fifteen grandchildren to do so. She united, through baptism, with Greater Shady Grove Baptist Church and never relinquished her love of The Triune God or His principles of being thankful for blessings large and small, extending grace you desire from God to others, and being content in whatever state life finds you.

Cassandra worked multiple food service and hospitality jobs during her lifetime, including: Krystal’s, Church’s Chicken and Burger King. It was at Burger King where she met some amazing friends, the “Burger King Crew”, and gained yet another nickname - “Cassie”. After years of working in this industry, Cassandra changed careers and worked in the Healthcare Industry. She was employed with New Horizons as an Adult Caregiver and an Independent Living Program Administer until her death; enjoying helping others help themselves.

In addition to her parents, Cassandra was preceded in death by a brother, Terry Johnson; an uncle, Lewis Gamble, Jr.; four aunts: Lillian Martin, Peggy Gamble, Margaret Campbell, and Catherine Stover.

On Wednesday, February 24, 2021, Cassandra transitioned from this earthly life to eternal life. She leaves to cherish her memory the apple of her eye and only child, Shetara Sumbry of Columbus, GA; a sister, Pamela Dianne Johnson of Columbus, GA; a brother, Ckoson (Laura) Johnson of Lithonia, GA; two nephew: Cordele Johnson of Seattle, WA and Nkosi Johnson of Decatur, GA; two nieces: LaShaunda (Tetsura) Daniel of Smyrna, GA and Torkwase (Damion) Holtzclaw of Montgomery, AL; two friends who became sisters: Vanessa Pitts Wyatt and Karen (Milton) Battle, both of Columbus, GA; and a host of cousins, other family, and friends.

The Homegoing service will be Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 12 PM in the Chapel at Progressive Funeral Home. The service will be live-streamed. (clickable link below)
