Mr. Lee Wesley “Mellow Fellow” Williams of Valley, AL, transitioned on February 8, 2024 at EAMC-Lanier, Valley, AL.
Lee Wesley Williams was born July 18, 1935, in Chambers County, Alabama. He was the son of the late Hosie Williams and Nannie Mae Williams of LaFayette, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents, one great granddaugther, Brittany Bailey, and his sibling, Carrie Huguley, Lemerle Martin, Wheeler Boyd, Robert Martin, and James Martin. Lee departed this life on February 8, 2024.
When he was two years old, his mother brought him to Lanett to live with his sister, Carrie Huguley. The first school he remembered attending was Jackson Hill School in Lanett, Alabama. Thereafter, he went to Lanier High. After leaving Lanier High, Lee played baseball for two years with the Havanna Cuban Red Sox based in Athens, Georgia. Afterwards, he then played three years with the Goshen Red Sox in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1960 at age 25, he tried out for the Olympics in the heavyweight boxing division.
In Lee’s words, he lived “a full and good life.” He was a baseball player, golfer, bowler, and recreational basketball coach, and he drove Taxi #5. He was employed as a construction worker with Batson Cook as a brick cutter. He was a part of the construction team that built the Lanett Public Housing. Lee was a parking attendant for the Atlanta Braves Stadium as
well.
Lee served in the United States Army. He went from Maxwell Airforce Base to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, where he received his basic training. After basic training, he was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was later honorably discharged in 1957.
Lee used his military benefits to attend vocational school for automotive mechanics in LaGrange, Georgia.
“Mellow Fellow,” “Valley,” and “Bae,” as he was known by many, worked for West Point Pepperell (Fairfax Mill) for 30 years in yarn preparation and later became a shipping supervisor. Bae retired from West Point Pepperell in 2000 which allowed him freedom to spend more time with his family and with his friends under “The Lying Tree.”
Because he felt the need to be covered by the blood, he confessed Christ and united with Mount Hermon Baptist Church under the pastorage of the late Reverend C. L. Daugherty. He was a member of the male Sunday School class where he loved listening to and reciting Bible verses.
He would give sound advice on life issues. Lee traveled with friends to court hearings, escorted to doctors’ appointments, served as a caregiver, and transported voters to the polls. He was a faithful traveling companion for his sister-in-love, Martha, as she transacted business in Atlanta and other destinations for her brother and his brother-in-love.
Lee had the unique talent of remembering telephone numbers, account numbers, and details of people he knew through the years and often stated that he knew about everything that happened in the Valley and Lanett area within the past 80 years. He used his Google Box to get current events, sports, and music. When it came to sports his favorite teams were the
Alabama State Hornets, Atlanta Braves, Auburn Tigers, New York Yankees, and any local athletic team.
Lee was willing to help anyone. He was a contributor to the Educational Advancement Foundation(EAF) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., HBCU’s, the American Red Cross, NAACP, St. Jude, Literacy Volunteers of America, the American Heart Foundation, Breast Cancer Foundation.
Lee for 39 years was a dedicated and proud HONEY-DO of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Lambda Zeta Omega Chapter. He supported the various fund raisers of Lambda Zeta Omega Chapter.
