Obituary For Emma Kate “Mama” Melton Elie

Emma Elie, affectionately known to most as “MaMa”, was born to Annie(Gunn) and George Melton Sr. on December 29,1928, in Chambers County, Alabama. She gained her wings into eternal rest on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at her residence in Lanett, Alabama. At an early age, Emma Kate became a charter member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church, under the pastoral leadership of Rev. O.D. Slaughter.

Emma attended Lanier High School in Lanett, Alabama. She was employed by West Point Pepperell for many years. She later became employed by Lanett City School System, as lunchroom manager, at Lanett Jr. High School until retirement. After retirement she became a foster parent for the State of Alabama.

Emma was predeceased by her husband Robert Charles Elie; her parents; her children, William Darden and Cynthia Madden; one grandchild, Sangabriel Thomas; two great grandchildren, Cameron Davidson and Markevious Harris; her siblings, Otis Melton, Catherine Strong, Willie Melton, Annie Tibbs, Dorothy Melton and Edith Melton.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: Tracy (Cecil) Murry, Jacqueline (Richard) Brooks, Mary Davidson, Carrie Thomas and Michael Darden; one brother George Melton Jr.; 18 grandchildren,Donquavious (Sharika) Young, Megan Young, Cierra Murry, Shanika Darden, JaKeiston (Demetrius Waters) Madden, Natasha Darden, Makieisha (Oscar Andrews) Darden, Bridget (Damian) Williams, LaShunda Darden, Kimberly Jones, Montrell (Michelle) Davidson, Maurice Davidson, Shontes (Toddrick) Smoot, Demetrius Brooks, Johnny (Yolanda) Darden, Monica Thomas, Naketa McCullough, Lueneta Darden; 50 great grandchildren and 28 great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Elie will be held on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. ET in the sanctuary of the Pilgrim Baptist Church, 420 North 12th Avenue, Lanett, Alabama 36863 with Dr. Frederick James, Pastor/Eulogist and Rev. Leonard Autry, assisting.

Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Public viewing will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the mortuary.
