Donald Stanley Potts, a beloved resident of West Point, Georgia passed away peacefully on March
18, 2025 at the age of 88. Donald was born September 12, 1936 to the late Nora Coar Potts and Jim
Olin Potts in the small town of West Point, GA, that would become his lifelong home.
Donald attended 10th Street School throughout his primary and middle school years and
graduated from Harrison High School. After high school, Donald joined the United States Air
Force where he served as an Inventory and Supply Specialist. He visited many places all over the
world during his service in the Air Force. Some of his fondest memories were of his time
stationed in South Korea.
When he completed his military contract he returned stateside and enrolled in Mississippi Valley
State University (Itta Bena, MS) where he was a Biology major with a minor in physical education.
After graduation, he began his career in education and would go on to earn his Masters of
Education from the University of West Georgia (Carrollton, GA) and Masters in Education
Leadership from Columbus State University (Columbus, GA).
Donald Potts led an impactful life in his community through his career in education spanning
greater than 35 years. He taught biology at Harrison High School (West Point, GA) and West Point
High School for several years and then became the Assistant Principal and later became the
Principal of West Point High School. He also coached the girls basketball team at West Point High
during his time there. When the school system consolidated, Mr. Potts became an Assistant
Principal at Troup County Comprehensive High School. He helped with deciding the name of the
school and assisted in establishing the policies and student handbook still used by the school
today. From Troup High School, he took the position as Director of Central Purchasing for Troup
County School Systems, retiring in the 1997-98 school year. The legacy and memory of Mr. Potts
will live on in the memory of his students throughout his years of service with Troup County
School Systems and also the few years spent in Meriwether County at Woodbury High School.
In Donald’s private, family life he was a testament of love, kindness, devotion and respect. He was
a doting son, caring for both his parents until their passing. He was a good provider and loving
husband who wasn’t afraid to cook dinner for his wife, take her on regular shopping sprees, and to
whisk her away on weekend getaways when he wasn’t building their next project or remolding the
home to meet her wishes. He loved showering her with gifts and never complained to be her
chauffeur, even though that always meant he was taking the scenic route. He was affectionately
known as “Papa”, and was the best grandfather and great-grandfather anyone could ever ask for.
He will be deeply missed by his family and can never be replaced.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jim O. Potts; mother, Nora C. Potts; grandfather, Dr.
Daniel Coar, MD; grandmother, Annie Toles; brother, Jimmy Potts; step-children, Craig Bernard
Peters and Alzater Elizabeth Peters.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Mary Phine Lee-Potts; his sister, Virginia Agnes Potts
Jones; his grand children, Jacylin Jattire Peters (Minisia) & Janiya Leigh Peters; great
grandchildren who loved dearly, Allandria Deanne Nelson, Seraphine Elizabeth Peters, and
