Mr. Arthur “Head” Atkinson, 70, of West Point, GA, transitioned on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, GA.
On December 5, 1952, Sandy Atkinson Jr. and Eva Lee Atkinson welcomed a baby boy whom they named Arthur Lee. He was the first child born to this union.
He was of the Baptist faith and joined the Greenwood Missionary Baptist Church at an early age.
"Head", as he was affectionately known was a graduate of West Point High School in the class of 1971. Arthur Lee was united in holy matrimony with Carrie Gilbert Atkinson. To this union three children were born, Crystal, Arthur Jr. and Dominique.
Arthur was employed by West Point Foundry until his health failed. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and most recently playing bingo as a resident of the nursing home. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family. Arthur's last outing was on Christmas day 2022 where he spent time with family and friends on Lovelace Road in West Point, which was his stomping grounds where he was born and raised.
On Tuesday, July 4, 2023 God sent his loving angels to give him eternal rest.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, his parents, one sister, Denise Cotton Rowe; a special nephew, Josh Evans, and a special, brother-in-law, Kenneth Bruce Patton.
He leaves to cherish her memory a loving daughter, Crystal Atkinson of Lanett, AL; two loving sons, Arthur Atkinson, Jr (Arielle Bledsoe) of LaFayette, AL and Dominique Atkinson (Sasha Bratton) of Columbus, GA; three grandchildren, Caisley Bledsoe, Aason Atkinson and Mackenzie Bratten; a devoted sister, Eloise A. Patton of Fayetteville, GA; two brothers, Sandy Atkinson, III of. College Parks, GA and Demarco Atkinson, of LaGrange, GA; brother-in-law George Gilbert (June Bailey) of West Point, GA; sisters-in-law; Denise (Chuck) Floyd, of Albany, GA, Helen Gilbert of West Point, GA and Deborah Gilbert of Lanett, AL; aunts, Frances Mahone of West Point, GA, Catherine Whitlow of Lanett, AL, Viola (Cornelius) Whitaker of West Point, GA, and Liz (Lee) Summers, of Jonesboro, GA; uncles, Morris (Glenda) Atkinson of Lithonia, GA; special nieces, Tameko (Drew) Mack of Wellington, FL, Latisha (Demond) Barker of Suffolk, VA and Chakina Patton of College Park, GA; special nephew, Sandy Atkinson IV of
LaGrange, GA; a special devoted friend, Charles (Winnie Mae) Houston of LaGrange, GA; friend, Minister Larry (Freddie) Williams, of Lanett, AL,; new friend Mr. Willie Pearman (former resident of the nursing home) other nieces and nephews and other family and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, 2:00 p.m. EDT in the sanctuary of the Greenwood Baptist Church, 4829 Veterans Memorial Parkway, Lanett, AL 36863 with Rev. Michael Winston, Pastor, Bishop Donald Lancaster, Eulogist, Rev. Jimmy Carlisle, Rev. Warren Goss, Min. Audrey Carter and Rev. Larry Williams, assisting.
Interment will follow in the Pinehill Cemetery, 2235 22nd Avenue, SW, Lanett, AL 36863.
Public Viewing will be held on Monday, July 10, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the mortuary.
