Alden "Al" Smith, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2024, in Winder, Georgia, at the age of 91.
He was born on September 1, 1932, in Grants Pass, Oregon, to proud parents John and Hattie Smith. He later moved as a young boy to Sparks, Nebraska where his family farmed until he joined the army at the age of 19.
Al was a dedicated City Water Superintendent for the city of Valentine, Nebraska for many years, and
served in the Army from February 1951 to January 1954, bravely serving our country as a Korean War
Veteran. After retiring from the city, Al found joy in working part-time at Smith Falls State Park in
Valentine Nebraska and later at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Georgia when his family moved back to Georgia in 2001.
In his free time, Al enjoyed gardening and had a green thumb, being able to grow anything in his garden.
Al also enjoyed traveling to the beach and he had a knack for winning at casinos, with slot machines
being his favorite game. He also enjoyed time spent with friends over coffee each morning.
Al was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Carol Y. Smith. He is survived by his children Ron Smith (Nancy) of Monroe, GA, Lynn Wood (Jimmy) of Dahlonega, GA, Frank Nash (Linda) of Sarasota, FL, Karen Jenkins (Ray) of Dawsonville, GA, Wanda Schroeder (Claus) of Concord, GA, and Debbie Brown of Atlanta, GA. Al also leaves behind nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Alvin Smith (Marian) of Lewiston, ID, and is survived by his sister, Wilma Moore (Lloyd) of Millboro, SD.
Al will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His vibrant personality, green thumb, and love for laughter will forever be remembered by his family and friends.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Gateway Gardens and Bristol Hospice for their
compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Bristol Hospice Foundation.

Dad it's hard for me to think you are gone... I will miss hearing you say" well hello there" when I call..I also will miss " you hang up first " game you always played when I call.. Your banana plant you gave me gets bigger every year. A part of you will always be in that plant.
I can't find the words to tell you how much I will miss you and the love I have for you. Please give Carol a hug for me, as I miss her smiling face. I love you, Dad.
Dad, I'm still having trouble believing you're gone. It hasn't quite sunk in yet. I feel like an orphan and the world seems so odd without you and Mom in it now. I hope you know how deeply loved you were and continue to be. You were the best dad anyone could ever ask for. Whenever I needed guidance, you were the one I called, always knowing the right answer. My passion for gardening, woodworking, and even chickens came from you—though I'm still on the fence about the chickens! You will be missed more than words can express. Please tell Mom that I love and miss her.
Love you forever and more, Lynn
