Obituary For William “Bill” Hawkins

Carter Funeral Home honorably announces the peaceful transition of Mr. William “Bill” Hawkins, a native son of Union Springs, AL.

Mr. Hawkins, 86, a United States Air Force Retiree, transitioned into eternity on October 8, 2022.

The Memorial Commemoration of Life Services will be held Monday, November 21, 2022, at 11:00 am from the sanctuary of the Wayman Chapel AME Church of Union Springs, AL. Pastor Ronald C. Smith will deliver the eulogy.

Interment with full military honors will occur at the Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, Ft, Mitchell, AL.

In accordance with recommended COVID-19 Protocols, all attendees are requested to utilize appropriate facial coverings, maintain social distancing, and minimize physical contact.

William Hawkins was born on May 25, 1936, in Union Springs, AL, to the late Claudia & Edward Hawkins and was one of ten siblings. Known to his family and friends as Bill, graduated from Carver High School in Union Springs, Alabama where he enjoyed such sports as basketball, baseball, & fishing. Fishing and bowling became lifelong passions.

He also sang in the school chorus & junior choir at Wayman Chapel AME Church and developed his voice and love for singing. Following high school, he enlisted in the Air Force and married his childhood sweetheart, the late Mary Sue Nance.

After retiring from the Air Force in Daytona Beach, Florida, William worked in billing at Halifax Hospital. Bill became a 30-year-plus member of the Mt Zion A.M.E. Church and was also a dedicated member of their various church choirs.

From his union with Mary Sue Nance, Bill leaves to cherish his memory, two daughters, K Alisa Hawkins Rosen of Los Angeles and Donna Hawkins of Hampton, VA; three granddaughters, Ava Stewart, Satori Rosen and Bodhi Rosen; one grandson, Jahi Gains; of Bill's 10 siblings, Malinda Hawkins Dix, George & Irvin Hawkins and a host of nieces and nephews; deceased are sisters & brothers: Edna Hawkins Copeland, Sarah, Perry, Curtis, Harold and Jesse Hawkins.

The Staff of Carter Funeral Home is honored to provide End of Life Services for the late Mr. William “Bill” Hawkins.
