In Loving Memory of Mattie Pearl Foster Todd
Mattie Pearl Foster Todd, born on October 9, 1951, departed from this
world on the early morning of Saturday, August 19, 2023. She was the
cherished daughter of the late Arthur and Louisa Foster, who preceded
her in death, as did her three brothers: Dave Cowanβs and Lawrence
Cowan's of Cleveland, Ohio, and Ishmael Burks of Buffalo, NY.
Mattie's journey began in Union Springs, Alabama, where she graduated
with pride from Carver High School as a distinguished member of the
Class of 1970. She later settled in New Jersey, where she found a
spiritual home at Old Ship of Zion Baptist Church, a beacon of her
unwavering faith.
Her commitment to the Lord was evident as she served as a dedicated
member of the Senior Usher Board, the Willing Workers group, and as
the past President of Sunday School. She also held the role of Financial
Secretary, a testament to her diligent dedication.
One could often hear Mattie proudly declare, "I am a child of God." Her
favorite scripture, Psalm 23, and her beloved book of the Bible, Romans,
reflected her deep spiritual connection. Mattie's heart was not only
devoted to her faith but to her friends as well. With an unyielding
protective nature, she cherished her friendships, especially her 52-year
bond with best friend Jackie Lattany of Somerset, NJ, and her 40-year
friendship with Charlease Hatchett, with whom she shared the battle
against cancer.
Left to honor her memory are her two beloved sons, Anthony Bernard
Todd, Sr of New Brunswick, NJ, and Christopher Bernard Todd of
Somerset, NJ. Her legacy lives on through her five cherished
grandchildren: Nazir Azyon Todd, Khylee Christina Todd, Trevor Marsel
McQueen, Anthony Bernard Todd Jr., Divione Marquel White, and great-
grandson Zachariah Bernard Todd.
She will long be cherished by her brothers, Willie (Portia) Cowan Clarence Foster, Curtis Love all of Union Springs, AL and Thomas and
Albert Foster Cleveland, Ohio
Mattie also embraced her godchildren as her own, including two
goddaughters, Lorraine Renee Burton and Precious Hill-Haskins, and
two godsons, Maurice D. Burton ,Ja Sean M. Betts, and Thomas Lewis,
Sr. all of Somerset, NJ. Her Old Ship of Zion Baptist Church family held
a special place in her heart, offering agape love that enveloped her
throughout her life.
Mattie's influence extended far and wide, touching the lives of numerous
nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever miss her radiant
presence.
As a recipient of a beautiful casket provided by the Connected Through
Cancer Foundation, founded by Harold & Charlease Hatchett of Spring,
Texas, her legacy is a testimony of love and devotion.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the foundation, as well as
to all those who have shown support and care during this time of
remembrance. May the memory of Mattie Pearl Foster Todd continue to
inspire and uplift all those who were fortunate to know her.
Carter Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the Final Life Celebration Arrangements for the late Mrs. Mattie Pearl Todd.
