Obituary For Florieda Anderson Major

It is with profound sadness that the Carter Funeral Home family announces the transition of one of their longtime associates, Florieda Anderson Major.

Serving and sharing for 78 years, Florieda peacefully transitioned into eternity on Sunday, March 5, 2023, in Union Springs, Alabama.

Celebration of Life Services for Florieda will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, March 18th at the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church. The message of acceptance will be delivered by Rev. Dr. Sidney D. Jernigan, Jr. Pastor of the Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Public visitation will be held Friday, March 17, 2023, from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm at Carter Funeral Home.

The life of Florieda Anderson Major came into existence on November 14, 1944. She was born to William James Anderson, Sr. and Annie Mae Anderson. Her earthly journey was completed on March 5, 2023 in Union Springs, Alabama. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruby Burgan and Bettye Price, her brothers, George Duane Anderson, William Anderson, Jr. and Kenneth Scott and her son Tinsley Major.

Florieda received her education at Aberfoil Elementary and Carver High School before graduating from North High School in Akron, Ohio. She then returned to Alabama where she attended Tuskegee Institute. She married Henry Major in September 1965 and they moved to Rochester, NY in November 1967.

While studying to become a teacher, Florieda did work in community-based organizations in Rochester, NY such as WEDGE and the Charles Street Settlement House. She received her associate degree from Monroe Community College, then went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Brockport College in Special Education. She worked for the Rochester City School District as a substitute teacher for several years before transitioning her career from teaching and became the Operations Manager for Benji’s Beauty Supply. During this time, she continued her education and received her master’s degree in special education. Eventually she became a Home and Hospital Tutor for the Rochester City School District and continued that work until she retired.

Left to mourn her passing are a devoted husband, Henry Mack Major; two daughters, Mrs. Lakeya (William) Daymon and Ms. Sauntevia Major; grandchildren, Ms. Mirjana Cooper, Giachino Barcelona, Journey Barcelona, Tyler Masetta and Tiana Masetta, all from Rochester, New York, and Mr. Majied (Rachel) Eason, Colorado Springs, Colorado; five sisters, Mrs. Anne (Melvin) Gregory, Flint, Michigan, Ms. Billie Hazzard, Union Springs, Alabama, Mrs. Annie (Frank) Lee, Detroit, Michigan, Ms. Bonnie Newby, Flint, Michigan, and Mrs. Marilyn (George) King, Akron, Ohio; several great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins as well as a host of other relatives and dear friends, including the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church Family.

The Staff of Carter Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the Final Life Celebration Arrangements for the late Mrs. Florieda Anderson Major.
