Carter Funeral Home announces the transition of Mr. Clarence Leon Austin, of Union Springs, Alabama. Affectionately known as “Sam”, Mr. Austin, 79, transitioned into eternal life December 4, 2021, at the East Alabama Medical Center of Opelika.

The Commemoration of Life will begin with a public visitation, Friday, December 17, 2021, from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Carter Funeral Home.

Farewell services at Graveside will be held Saturday, December 18, 2021, at 2:00 pm from the County Line AME Zion Cemetery, Union Springs, AL. Rev. Donald Carr will deliver the message of comfort.

Mr. Clarence L. Austin was born on January 1, 1942, in Bullock County, Alabama to the late Mrs. Deannie Austin Jones. He departed his life on Saturday, December 4, 2021, after becoming ill for a short period. He was the youngest of four children. Sam was a proud graduate of Merritt High School where he graduated in1961. After graduation he worked several jobs which included his employment with Columbus Mills, Inc.. Later in life he was hired by the Bullock County Commission where he retired. Sam professed his life to Christ at an early age and joined the Countyline AME Zion Church in Armstrong, Alabama. At Countyline Sam served faithfully on several committees, which included the Sunday School Superintendent and the Treasurer. He loved working in the church, reading his bible, praying for and with others. Sam loved spending time with family, fishing, laughing and always wearing a smile. He was an active member of the Magnificent Twelve Club. He was a loving father, uncle, brother and friend who always put others first. “To know Sam was to love him.”

Sam was preceded in death by his Grandmother Miss Pearl Austin, his brother Mr. Walter Jones, his mother Mrs. Deannie Austin Jones, and his sister Mrs. Ernestine Austin Caldwell. He leaves to cherish his loving memory three sons, Mr. Darrel C. Owens, Mr. Thomas Davis, and Mr. Antonio Owens, one sister, Mrs. Ora Lee Veil (Miami, Florida) and a host of grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and cousins. He had a special friend like a sister, Mrs. Eddie Mae Cowan, best friend, Mr. John Blackmon and a large host of family, friends and associates. In accordance with recommended COVID-19 Protocols, all attendees are requested to utilize appropriate facial coverings, maintain social distancing, and minimize physical contact.

The Staff of Carter Funeral Home is honored to be selected to provide End of Life Services for the late Mr. Clarence Leon “Sam” Austin.
