James Mitchell

Passed 07/16/2021

Progressive Funeral Home respectfully announces the passing of MSG (Ret.) James Mitchell age 76 of South Carolina on July 16, 2021.

MSG (Ret.) James Mitchell was born on Johns Island, South Carolina as one of 14 children to his parents Moses and Helen Mitchell. He was proud of his Gullah heritage and did not mind being called a Geechee. Always a hard worker from the age of 12, he joined the military at 18 so that he could continue to help his mother and siblings back home. That path soon led him to Ft. Benning in Columbus, GA where he would meet and marry the true love of his life, Doris C. Baskin. Their union lasted until she went to be home with the Lord twenty years later.

MSG (Ret.) James Mitchell served his country honorably in the U.S. Army for 22 years, 5 months, and 4 days and retired with a host of accolades and accomplishments too numerous to list. He joined Primerica Financial Services just before his retirement when it was still known as A. L. Williams. There, with the help of his loving wife Doris, he became the first African American Regional Vice President in Columbus, GA and reached the status of Senior Vice President. But his most prized accomplishment in life was his relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Anyone who knew MSG (Ret.) James Mitchell knew that he loved the Lord because he would tell you even if you didn’t want to hear it. Likewise, we all knew that there was no one that would pray more fervently and without ceasing for anyone the Lord laid on his heart. His greatest wish was that each and every person would come to have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus. He would often say the testimony and life of his wife Doris led him to this passion.

He is survived by: his children – Monica Mitchell, Traci Pollet, and Sean Mitchell; his grandchildren – Aleksi Reid, Shinette King, Ian Kelley, Corrine Pollet, Symonne Pollet, Angelese Mitchell and Christopher Mitchell; his son-in-law – Stacy Pollet; his sisters – Margaret and Anna Lee; a loving and supportive niece – Francena Freeman; a great grandson – Kaiden King; and an abundance of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, co-workers, and others that enjoyed his company.

The Homegoing Service for Mr. Mitchell will be Monday, July 26, 2021, at 10 AM in the Chapel of Progressive Funeral Home the interment will follow at Main Post Cemetery. The signing of the register book for Mr. Mitchell will be Sunday, July 25, 2021 from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M.
